Saath Kabar (Sixty Graves)- A Dark Graveyard among Bijapur Historical Places

Saath Kabar is a famous dark tourist spot in Bijapur city of Karnataka. The place is a grave destination. A tragic incident and a dreadful story is related to this dark spot beside the glorious Bijapur historical places past. During the rule of then ruler Ali Adil Shah, Afzal Khan was the army chief in his army. During the ongoing wars between Chatrapathi Shivaji and Ali Adil Shah II, an astrologer predicted to the Afzal Khan that he would be killed on the battlefield and would never return. The loss is sure during the battle against Shivaji. He had 63 wives whom he did not want to be married to other after his own death. He decided to kill all of his sixty-three wives of his own before going for a battle against Shivaji. He took them near the well and pushed one by one all of his wives into the well. Two of his own wives tried to escape but were chased killed by his army.  He buried his all dead wives that are known to be sixty graves, “Sath Kabar”. One grave is still empty which is known to be his grave but he could not able to return from the war as the prophecy comes true.

There is no written evidence of this gruesome incident in any of the written record of happened in a navraspur, away from the main Bijapur city. A way to Sath Kabar is little bumpy, as there is no clear path to the place. The place is in a little outer area of the walled city having all important Bijapur Historical Places and monuments of the Shah dynasty. This spooky place still gives a goosebump during a visit and one can imagine the hues and cries happening during the pleading for life.
